Football Team 1996 

It is with great pride, reverence, and conviction that I formally nominate the 1996 Howard University Football Team for induction into the Howard University Athletics Hall of Fame. The 1996 team stands as one of the most accomplished, cohesive, and nationally respected teams in the storied history of Howard University athletics — a team that not only won games, but also embodied the true spirit of excellence, discipline, and legacy that our university represents.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Steve Wilson, the Bison achieved a remarkable 10–2 overall record and a 6–1 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), culminating in a dramatic 27–24 victory over Southern University in the Heritage Bowl. That victory earned Howard the prestigious title of Black College National Champion, a distinction that forever cemented the 1996 squad in the annals of Black college football history.

This team was led by a roster filled with exceptional student-athletes — among them Quarterback Ted White, Defensive Lineman Marques Douglas, and a host of dedicated teammates who combined intelligence, athleticism, and grit to create one of the most dominant units in MEAC history. Their collective success was not the result of individual stardom alone, but of a culture of accountability, preparation, and brotherhood that has become a model for future Bison teams.

Beyond the numbers, the 1996 Bison Football Team represented a cultural turning point for the University. Their achievements revitalized school pride, strengthened alumni engagement, and elevated Howard’s standing among HBCUs nationwide. The national recognition that followed their championship season was not just a victory for the players and coaches — it was a victory for the entire Howard community, past and present.

Nearly three decades later, their impact remains deeply felt. Many of those players went on to become professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, coaches, and leaders in their respective fields, continuing to reflect the university’s mission of producing leaders for America and the global community.
