Football Team 1996 

 

The 1996 Howard University Football Team stands as one of the most accomplished and nationally respected teams in the history of Bison athletics. Their season remains a defining moment for the program, a year marked by excellence, discipline, unity, and a championship legacy that continues to shape Howard football today.

Under Head Coach Steve Wilson, the Bison led a remarkable 10–2 overall record and a dominant 6–1 finish in MEAC play. Their season culminated in a dramatic 27–24 victory over Southern University in the Heritage Bowl, earning Howard the prestigious title of Black College National Champion. This achievement cemented the 1996 team’s place among the greatest squads in Black college football history.

The team’s success was driven by a roster of exceptional student‑athletes, including Quarterback Ted White, Defensive Lineman Marques Douglas, and a host of dedicated teammates whose intelligence, athleticism, and grit formed one of the most dominant units in MEAC history. Their achievements were not defined by individual stardom alone, but by a culture of accountability, preparation, and brotherhood a standard that continues to influence Bison football today.

Beyond the numbers, the 1996 Bison represented a cultural turning point for Howard University. Their championship season revitalized school pride, strengthened alumni engagement, and elevated Howard’s standing among HBCUs nationwide. The national recognition they earned was not just a victory for the players and coaches — it was a victory for the entire Howard community.

Nearly three decades later, their impact remains deeply felt. Many members of the 1996 team have gone on to become professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, coaches, and leaders in their fields, continuing to embody Howard University’s mission of producing leaders for America and the global community.

Hall of Fame recognition for the 1996 Howard University Football Team is not only deserved — it is long overdue.
