D. Orlando Ledbetter 

 

D. Orlando Ledbetter, ESQ is one of Howard University’s most influential and pioneering sports journalists, a trailblazer whose work as a student and professional helped open doors for generations of Black sportswriters. His career began at Howard, where he served as the public address announcer for Bison Football from 1980–84, working alongside Barry Hudson as his spotter. At the same time, Ledbetter emerged as a groundbreaking student journalist for The Hilltop, writing 98 articles as a traveling beat writer and covering the famed Dunk Patrol basketball era, including the 1983–84 team’s historic trip to Hawaii.

As a sophomore, Ledbetter became the lead sports writer on the staff of future Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson before rising to Editor‑in‑Chief of The Hilltop as a senior. His leadership and reporting excellence helped shape the newspaper’s sports coverage and paved the way for future Howard alumni who would go on to national prominence in sports media — including Steve Wyche, Jim Trotter, Terez Paylor, and Gus Johnson.  

 

Ledbetter’s professional career is distinguished by national recognition and industry‑defining contributions. He covered the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL for the Atlanta Journal‑Constitution, earning multiple honors, including being named the 2022 Georgia Co‑Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. His accolades also include three Associated Press Sports Editors awards and a first‑place PWFA Dick Connor Writing Award.

In 2024, Ledbetter received one of the highest honors in sports journalism — induction into the Writer’s Wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame after winning the prestigious Bill Nunn Jr. Award. He is also a longtime member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, helping shape the sport’s historical record at the highest level.

Beyond his reporting, Ledbetter has been a leader in advancing opportunities for Black journalists. He was a founder and the first secretary of the NABJ Sports Task Force, an organization that has become a cornerstone of professional development and advocacy in sports media. His career includes impactful roles at The Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee Journal‑Sentinel, The Cincinnati Enquirer, and The Charlotte Observer.
