1989 Women’s Volleyball 

The 1989 Howard University women’s volleyball team established a foundation of excellence that helped shape the future of Bison volleyball. Long before rally scoring, libero jerseys, and NCAA tournament appearances became part of the sport, these pioneers set a championship standard through their resilience, talent, and teamwork.

 

The Lady Bison finished the season with a 23–10 overall record and a perfect 12–0 mark in MEAC competition, capturing the MEAC Championship while remaining undefeated in both conference regular-season and tournament play. They also claimed titles at the Bucknell Tournament, Georgetown Tournament, and Hampton Classic, and finished the season ranked 96th among 255 NCAA Division I programs. The team’s success was fueled by outstanding individual performances. Arlinda Pierce directed the offense as the team’s floor leader, while Kialyn Walker led the attack in kills. Marie Romulus provided a powerful offensive presence, and Nocola Thompson anchored the defense as the team’s leading blocker. Charisa Courts excelled as the team’s No. 2 setter, while Rebecca Sanders contributed with versatile all-around play. Sandra Crenshaw’s serve produced 42 aces, and Tabitha “Tabby” Elliott made key contributions on both offense and defense. Michele Simmons brought leadership and court awareness, Andria Miller added 70 kills and a strong serve, Robin Williams recorded 67 kills, and Phan Luong provided steady reliability throughout the season. Despite injuries, the team remained united and determined.

 

Their championship season embodied perseverance, teamwork, and trailblazing achievement, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire Howard University volleyball today.
