1989 Women’s Volleyball

The 1989 Howard University women’s volleyball team established excellence and set a championship standard that helped shape the future of Bison volleyball. Competing in an era before rally scoring, libero jerseys, and NCAA tournament appearances, this trailblazing group built a foundation of excellence through resilience, talent, and unwavering teamwork. The Lady Bison finished the season with a 23–10 overall record and a flawless 12–0 mark in MEAC play, capturing the MEAC Championship and remaining undefeated in both the conference regular season and tournament. Their dominance extended beyond league play as they claimed titles at the Bucknell Tournament, Georgetown Tournament, and Hampton Classic, ultimately finishing the year ranked 96th among 255 NCAA Division I programs.

The team’s success was powered by standout individual performances across the roster. Arlinda Pierce directed the offense as the team’s floor leader, while Kialyn Walker led the attack in kills. Marie Romulus added a strong offensive presence, and Nocola Thompson anchored the defense as the leading blocker. Charisa Courts excelled as the No. 2 setter, and Rebecca Sanders contributed with versatile all‑around play. Sandra Crenshaw delivered 42 aces from the service line, and Tabitha “Tabby” Elliott made key contributions on both offense and defense. Michele Simmons brought leadership and court awareness, Andria Miller added 70 kills and a powerful serve, Robin Williams recorded 67 kills, and Phan Luong provided steady reliability throughout the season.

Despite injuries and challenges, the team remained united and determined. Their championship season reflected perseverance, discipline, and collective strength, qualities that defined their identity and set the tone for future generations of Bison volleyball.

The legacy of the 1989 team continues to inspire Howard University volleyball today. Their achievements, leadership, and trailblazing spirit established a winning culture that paved the way for the program’s continued growth and success.
